Pretty in Pink featuring Chanel May Nail Polish

I was very fortunate to have yesterday off work, so I went to visit my mom. We spent the afternoon acting like vegetables on the couch and watching West Wing on Netflix while painting our nails. I picked out Chanel May from her makeup drawer because I’m sick of winter and pink nails make me happy.

Chanel May Le Vernis

May is from last year’s spring collection (I think?) and it’s a slightly-darker-than-bubblegum pink creme. I took this shot with two coats and looking back I probably should have used three to get complete opacity. It leans ever so slightly cool and has an interesting milkiness that makes it more flattering on me than bright pinks.

Chanel May is still available at Nordstrom for $27.00

Color Club Put a Pin In It

SONY DSC

This shade is part of an exclusive collaborative collection between Color Club and Birchbox, so you can only purchase it on the Birchbox website for $8.00 – I happen to think it’s worth the price because good metallics are hard to find. This one is super shiny and has no visible brushstrokes. Even better, it wasn’t a total pain to remove like some glittery metallics can be.  I like it!

Shades from the OPI Germany Collection (Fall 2012)

Many apologies for the state of my cuticles! I apply hand cream at least once a day and it keeps my hands soft, but my cuticles have been such a mess. Hope you enjoy these colors! I’m wearing one on each hand because I was swatching last night and got so wrapped up in the DNC speeches that I forgot to fix it :)

Top 10 Favorite Summer Nail Polishes

I’ve been on a big nail polish kick lately and I wanted to feature some of the bright shades that have caught my eye. I don’t believe that these are the only colors you should wear in the summer, but it feels so right to slap on some hot orange nail polish when it’s 100 degrees outside.

Top 10 Favorite Summer Nail Polishes

Clockwise from bottom left:

  1. OPI Kiss Me On My Tulips (berry creme)
  2. Zoya Kylie2 (hot red creme)
  3. Zoya Maya (pinky-coral jelly)
  4. OPI Mod-ern Girl (hot orange jelly)
  5. Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow (banana yellow creme)
  6. Essie Turquoise & Caicos (aqua jelly)
  7. OPI Suzi Says Feng-Shui (cerulean creme)
  8. Sally Hansen Hard As Nails No Hard Feelings (violet creme)
  9. Sally Hansen HD DVD (blue/purple duochrome)
  10. Zoya Jules (light gold foil)

While doing these swatches I got the idea to test Sally Hansen DVD on top of Sally Hansen No Hard Feelings and it’s sooooo pretty. I’ll do a full manicure and take pics later this week!

What are you wearing on your nails these days?

Revlon Just Bitten Balm Stain Swatch Megapost!

I may have purchased a couple more Balm Stains over the past few weeks…

Revlon Balm Stain in Charm, Rendezvous, Romantic, Crush, Smitten, Sweetheart, and Honey

Charm, Rendezvous, Romantic, Crush, Smitten, Sweetheart, and Honey

Since the formula is so similar between the shades, I decided to do one big megapost of all the swatches and a general review of the formula. (The fact that I am swamped with work right now might have contributed to this decision.) Here goes!

Sinful Colors Open Seas Review & Swatches

As the self-proclaimed queen of aqua/turquoise/mint nail polish, I’ve been dying to get my hands on OPI Mermaid’s Tears… but every time I saw the display in Ulta I decided against getting it. Mermaid’s Tears just didn’t wow me enough to be worth $8.50.

Fortunately I spotted the suspiciously similar Sinful Colors Adventure Island collection at Rite Aid and bought Open Seas for only $1.99. BAM!

Open Seas is a greyed mint green creme that applies wonderfully. It’s a little more subdued (as subdued as light green can get) than my other mint/aqua polishes… almost antique looking. Very similar to Eyeko Vintage polish, but Open Seas is less blue.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Istanbul Review

NYX built a reputation on their high quality but extremely affordable products. Over the past few months, they’ve launched several more expensive product lines, including these Soft Matte Lip Creams ($5.99).

I went with Istanbul, a light cool pink that’s similar to Revlon Matte Pink Pout. It applies with a slippery but dry feel, almost like a silicone-laden face primer (for example, Smashbox Photo Finish). The first application definitely felt a bit strange. Since the formula isn’t very wet to begin with, it dries down within a minute to a matte finish.

Chanel Fall 2011 Nail Polishes

Okay ladies, I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that when I went to swatch MAC Semi-Precious today, 4-5 of the testers were already gone. Serves me right for waiting a week! The good news is that I brought my nail wheel and a lovely Chanel sales associate let me play with the new fall shades.

Graphite, Peridot, Quartz

Chanel has a reputation for creating “it” shades – a reputation that grows with every passing season. If only they weren’t so expensive!

  • Graphite is a warm medium silver that reminds me of New Year’s Eve. It’s substantially lighter than last year’s OPI Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous. I love the foil finish because it’s smooth to the touch and there are no visible brush strokes.
  • Peridot is a shapeshifter. At any given moment you’ll see at least 3 different colors, including gold, olive, sea green, jungle green, and even flashes of orange. It has a metallic finish that shows some brush strokes, but it wasn’t too hard to work with. I really love the idea of this color, however I didn’t love the way it looked with my skin.
  • Quartz is a surprisingly interesting shade of beige with fine metallic shimmer running through. In person it definitely registered as more of a nude shade than as a silvery shade, which is how it appears in some photos I’ve seen. I think this would be an amazing shade for someone who isn’t able to wear brights for work/school but still wants some fun.

Chanel nail polishes are $25.00 each (ouch!) and available from Nordstrom online.

Fun fact: Peridot is my birthstone. What’s yours?

MAC Flighty Swatches

Here are the swatches for MAC Flighty, and you can read the collection details here. As I expected, these Big Bounce Shadows did not live up to their claims of lasting power. Both Temptalia and Allura experienced quick creasing when applied to the lids. The shadows also claim to be mousse-like, but I find they more resemble a gel-cream (a lot of moisturizers have this texture, so I hope it’s familiar to some of you). They’re super emollient and a little goes a long way.

MAC Fashion Flower Swatches

I’m back in swatching action! Hopefully these will still be useful even though they’re a little bit late. In case you forgot, here are the official descriptions of each product.

The eyeshadows in this collection were all over the place in terms of quality. Lucky Green (Veluxe Pearl), Fresh Daisy (Frost), Bows & Curtseys (Satin), and Groundcover (Matte) were lovely to work with. Aqua and Free To Be (both Matte) were much more difficult. This sheer swatch of Aqua is the result of about 8 layers… and normally I only do 1 or 2.

The Beauty Powders were great as usual. Light Sunshine has very subtle shimmer in a pastel pink base. You’ll definitely need to click for the big size picture to see it! Alpha Girl is a gorgeous coral that could work as a blush. Both are soft and finely milled powders.
