Updated Makeup Storage – taking suggestions!

When I lived with my parents, 99% of my makeup lived in an IKEA Alex drawer unit. It was beautiful, but I decided to leave it in my old closet because I knew it would stick out like a sore thumb next to my all-white living room furniture. In my infinite wisdom (sarcasm), I instead chose to take a Sterilite drawer unit I used for accessories and repurpose it for my makeup collection. It’s not exactly the most attractive thing in the world:

I had every intention of replacing it with something nicer once I’d moved, but here we are months later and it’s still sitting next to my desk. I just haven’t found something that’s to my taste and within budget.

I did a little reorganization this week in honor of a new nail polish rack and I thought I’d share the current state of my makeup storage. I hope it gives you guys some inspiration and that maybe you can give me some inspiration of my own! I could use ideas.

As you can see above, my makeup brushes live on top of the unit in an acrylic container with 4 compartments. Next to that is my spot cleaner for brushes and the body lotion I use frequently. Speaking of frequent, I want to note that I keep my everyday makeup in a separate cosmetics bag and rotate out the products every week or two. This works best for me since I pack up often to visit my boyfriend.

I keep the rest of the makeup in the top drawer, and as you can see it’s pretty sparse! I’ve done a LOT of cleaning out lately because I was starting to feel like a hoarder. Aside from the lip products in my purse (there must be at least 5) and the Aquaphor I keep by my bed, this is pretty much it for makeup.

The middle drawer is for tools and accessories. Here I’ve got makeup/nail polish remover, nail care tools, sharpeners/tweezers, and a mix of random things sorted in plastic baggies. That’s where I keep empty palettes, my Back2MAC empties, and my brush guards.

On the bottom I’ve got a new drawer just for items that need to be reviewed. I cleared out my nail polish so that I could keep these products organized instead of randomly strewn across my desk.

The reason I cleared out my nail polish drawer is that I finally ordered a nail polish rack! It came this week and I installed it in my closet… it was a hilarious juggling act that somehow resulted in the thing being installed, level and everything! I’m so excited to finally be able to see all my polishes at once instead of staring down at the handles and wondering what color I’m looking at. And look, so much room to expand!!! ;)

So that’s it for my makeup storage! I’m sure I won’t be able to keep things so under control for long, but I hope to have a better storage solution soon. Any ideas?

Hey, sorry for the late reply!! I think I got that at the Container Store. It’s actually 1 unit made of 3 pieces so the width is adjustable. Target also has nice dividers in the kitchen section. Good luck!
