Site Redesign + Tour of New Features!

I am so excited to show you the new site design! After weeks spent elbow-deep in HTML and CSS, I think I’m finally done. I substantially changed the feel of the blog with a new color scheme and new graphics (all created by me). I also added some exciting features.

The Blog Sale Database

Here you’ll find a spreadsheet of blog sales with information like seller location, brands being sold, and where the seller ships to. Right now you can only search by pressing CTRL+F, however I have plans in the works for an embedded search bar. There’s also a link that will let you submit info for a new blog sale entry.

The Header Widget

Here you’ll find links to my main social media accounts and a search bar.

Sidebar Tabs

I wanted to make the most useful posts easily accessible, so I put them into tabs in the sidebar. Tab 1 lists upcoming MAC collections, Tab 2 list upcoming collections from other brands, and Tab 3 lists the most viewed posts.

Post Rating Buttons

This is a quick way for you to give feedback on each post. Click Love It if you’re excited about the product(s), or Leave It if you think what I’m writing about is a dud. Ratings are really helpful because they let me know which things I should write more about and which I should skip in the future. Plus, it’s cool to see what other people are saying!

Review Navigation

The last part is just a navigation change. If you hover over Reviews in the top bar, you’ll see a dropdown menu. By Brand will take you to a linked list of brands I’ve written about. By Product Type will take you to a page with different types of products.

So for example, if you want to find cream blush reviews you would hover over Reviews, click By Product Type, then click Cream Blush. You could also search for cream blush at the top of the page.

The new design has just gone live, so there will probably be glitches for a few days. If you find a problem (or if there’s an aspect of the design you love/hate), please leave a comment or send me an email! Just be gentle if you’re telling me you hate something :)

I am loving the new layout. I love that it is simple, sleek and profesional.
I also really like that you chose not to have a slide show of pictures from recent posts at the top like a lot of blogs do. I find it very distracting (I clearly like clean simple designs where the actual blog posts are the highlight)

Did you hire someone for the design or learn how to do it yourself?

Thank you! I used this theme as a framework and customized the design on top of that. It was a lot of work, but I’m glad I took the time to learn a new skill!

The new site looks great! I love the clean look. I just finished up a semester of web design, but it didn’t cover a lot of elements that you used. Do you have suggestions for good CSS/ design resources ? Any books or websites would be awesome.

Thank you! The best resource by far was W3 Schools. I used the Google Chrome Inspector liberally, and I much preferred programming in Linux vs. Windows because it’s easier to edit and upload files (1 step vs. 2 or more).

May I add to the I-love-the-clean-look chorus? Nice work!
