NYX built a reputation on their high quality but extremely affordable products. Over the past few months, they’ve launched several more expensive product lines, including these Soft Matte Lip Creams ($5.99).

I went with Istanbul, a light cool pink that’s similar to Revlon Matte Pink Pout. It applies with a slippery but dry feel, almost like a silicone-laden face primer (for example, Smashbox Photo Finish). The first application definitely felt a bit strange. Since the formula isn’t very wet to begin with, it dries down within a minute to a matte finish.

Unlike traditional mattes, I don’t find Soft Matte Lip Cream to be drying. It does seem to latch onto any bits of dry skin and accentuate them, so be sure to exfoliate thoroughly beforehand. I typically just use a washcloth or my toothbrush because I’ve never found a lip scrub I particularly liked.

The applicator is a standard doefoot wand that seems fine with this light shade, though with a dark shade you may want something more precise. For that I highly recommend the Make Up For Ever 3N lip brush ($18).
Bottom Line: This is a great option for people who want a matte finish, but those looking for moisture should search elsewhere.
Are you into the matte lip look?

How do they hold up in a typical day and a lip balm on top?
I didn’t find the wear time to be great, but I usually have to reapply before most people (I think I just talk too much!)
If you’re looking for good wear time, I would definitely go with a matte lipstick + balm over this product. Revlon makes good ones!
